When I sit back and I think about the previous year, I’m honestly dumbfounded by how much has happened. I can’t name a single aspect of my life that hasn’t changed over the course of this past year. I started this blog as a way to keep writing even while I was working. As many, if not all of you know it is my goal/dream to write for a living. As with anyone who’s career depends on a very difficult industry to get into, I knew I needed a day job. After floundering around, I found culinary school. I had to stop writing to simply finish school, there was just no time. When I graduated, I knew I needed to go back to my original goal, but the prospect of starting another long term writing project like a novel was just too much. So I procrastinated and procrastinated on it, until a bout of food poisoning had me laid up in bed. I had so much free time on my hands at that point that I started getting interested in the Sims Forums. From there, the rest is history, really. I discovered the challenge and felt that strange surge of inspiration. I started this as a lark really, not expecting to have any readers or any “success”. I figured I’d get bored and quit after a while. When I posted my first thing on May 31st, I had exactly 2 hits. It was about what I had expected. Suddenly, in June people began to notice my blog. It was strange. I went from 2 hits on that last day of May to a total of 1,815 in June. For reasons I have yet to understand, people seem to enjoy this blog. Haha.
I’m so grateful that people are interested in what I write, and every single compliment is taken to heart. Without the constant flow of feedback, it just wouldn’t be the same and I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t be as good. When I write I sit down and think of how I can wow everyone next. Its a constant effort, but a good one, to produce an entry I feel proud of you guys reading. You guys make me work, and that’s fantastic. That is the difference between writing this blog and writing a novel. I know I have to maintain a certain level of quality, so I keep myself in line. Haha.
I’m still overwhelmed by the wonderfulness of everyone in regards to my er, recent drama. Honestly, a few of the comments brought me to tears. You all are just wonderful, a person couldn’t ask for better people. My “success” is mostly due to all of you, so again…thank you. I hope to keep on writing Let it Be and/or various other projects for a long time to come.
Which brings me to something I’m announcing ahead of time. Let it Be is now in Generation 9 and I am nearing the end of the project (or rather where I’m going with it) at the end of the main storyline I am going to be doing a few special chapters of something I’m tentatively calling: “Let it Be: What Might Have Been” where I will do some of the bigger side characters stories. For example, I will write Parker’s generation as it would have been if she had been chosen heiress. 🙂 I’m very excited about it, and I hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I am just thinking about it.
So, for this little special, in the same spirit, as part of the festivities we’ll examine what would have happened if certain decisions hadn’t been made. First, a few bios.
Text in Italics is my notes. Regular typeface is from the heir/ess.
Generation 1 – Farmer – James Mason
- Loves the Outdoors
- Family Oriented
- Green Thumb
Lifetime Wish: Surrounded by Family – Achieved
James’ generation is probably the only one I’m actually slightly embarrassed of. His generation was when I was getting a feel for this whole crazy thing. His was one where I actually played and then let the story happen organically. Needless to say, that really didn’t last long, haha. I had his character much more in mind though, than I did for others. His was already pre-determined, I knew exactly what I wanted him to be like. I think about going back and rewriting his entire generation quite often.
Unfortunately for James, he received no votes in the favorite heir poll. However, he and Keri received five votes for the “favorite couple” question. Which I think is fitting. James’ story did not really come alive until Keri wandered into his life.
Name: James Tyler Mason Sr.
Spouse: Keri McClure Mason
Favorite Memory: There are so many great moments that one can experience in life. The first green sprouts jutting proudly through the Earth…the woman of your dreams choosing you to spend her life with, seeing your newborn’s eyes open for the first time, watching your children leave your home to make families of their own, but perhaps the best moment I have ever experienced was when my son Thomas and I finally became friends.
Hardest Moment: Telling my son, Thomas, that I was done with him…or dealing with Keri’s post partum.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I’m not sure I would do anything differently. My life turned out wonderfully, I lived a good, long life and had many children to continue my name. My life ended in an entirely happy place, though I couldn’t continue to live without my Keri. I guess if it comes down to it, the one thing I would change is for me to go first.
Generation 2 – Business – Thomas Mason
- Hates the Outdoors
Lifetime Wish: Become CEO – Achieved
Thomas’ generation marked where I started to feel more comfortable with my writing this and the blog itself. I started to experiment with plot that I had decided rather than what the game had given me. This also marked one of the first times I let the character decide her own fate. In the case of Hannah, she turned out to be an entirely different person from who I had originally envisioned. Thomas’ story is still very dear to me, because it really laid the groundwork for the generations to come. I consider him the real start of the legacy. It was him, after all, who opened the safety deposit box.
Thomas received 6 votes in the heir poll and he and Lois recieved 5 votes for favorite couple, part of a three-way tie with Keri/James and Vincent/Angela.
Name: Thomas James Mason
Occupation: Business man extraordinaire.
Spouse: Lois Felix-Mason.
Favorite Memory: When Lois said yes.
Hardest Moment: Picking up the pieces after Hannah left and my parents died.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: An obvious choice would be to say that I would never date Hannah, but without her, I wouldn’t have my two wonderful children. Instead I would change Hannah’s involvement with my children.
Generation 3 – Travel – Bradley Mason
- Commitment Issues
Lifetime Wish: Physical Perfection – Achieved
Bradley, Bradley. Bradley is probably my personal favorite. He still holds a special place in my heart. His story was really when Let it Be began to blossom. It was also a time period when my personal life was going really awesome too, so maybe that’s why. Haha. Bradley was the first story that was entirely planned out (with the exception of the Natalie part). Speaking of the Natalie part of the story – I’m referring to when she ran away – I wrote myself into a hole and I needed something to come back. That is the one thing I’d change about this generation. I would completely take the Natalie part out. Though, I would leave in the part where Bradley finally stands up to Hannah. That part came entirely by surprise for me. But, its was a pleasant surprise. Bradley is my heir who lived the longest out of everyone, he lasted about 121 sim days. He actually outlived his wife, his children and got to see his Great-Great Grandchildren grow up to young adults. He will always be my favorite. He’s one of the few heirs that became a real person to me, and I actually miss him from time to time. If that doesn’t sound creepy, haha.
Bradley came in third for favorite heir and second in favorite couple! Also, Bradley’s wife Xia-Wen was voted favorite spouse, but more on that later.
Name: Bradley Phillip Mason
Spouse: Xia Wen Lin-Mason
Favorite Memory: Seeing China for the first time, in all of its beautiful glory.
Hardest Moment: My sister leaving her children behind.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I would never have taken Natalie to meet our mother. I blame myself every day for that.
Generation 4 – Writing – River Mason
- Hopeless Romantic
Lifetime Wish: Professional Author – Achieved
Though I base all of my characters on myself in some way, River is the heiress who is most like me. With the new traits, I would take out her loner trait and put in shy (as I would also do with my simself). She is my second favorite, but its a very small margin. What I love though is that River’s story almost didn’t happen. When it came time to choose between Parker and River I had two stories in mind, one for each girl. It was the first time I had ever really had an issue picking an heir. I knew that I wanted to do a plot from a classic novel for the writer gen, much in the way that Clueless and Bridget Jones’ Diary are all take offs of Jane Austen novels. I knew immediately that Parker’s story would be Pride and Prejudice as she had always reminded me of Lizzie Bennett. River, however, was a different animal all together. I needed a story with a female character like River, but I knew I wanted there to be some real drama behind it. I wanted a story with substance and after a lot of research, I realized that Middlemarch was the way to go. So, River’s story was one of the stories in George Eliot’s Middlemarch. I loved her generation over all, and I do consider it one of the best ones I’ve done.
For good reason, River was voted the favorite heir AND she and her husband Will were voted favorite couple! So, I guess its safe to say that yo guys would agree that she was my best generation.
Name: River Mason
Spouse: I was first married to a Conrad Castle, after I was widowed, I married the love of my life, Will Eliot.
Favorite Memory: My first best-seller.
Hardest Moment: My entire marriage to Conrad. The only good thing to come out of that, was my first born son, Holden-Thomas.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I would have been a better mother to my daughter, Scarlett.
Generation 5 – Music – Scarlett Mason
- Party Animal
Lifetime Wish: Rock Star – Achieved
Scarlett was my first instance of multi-generation planning. When it came time to think about the future (in the middle of River’s generation) I knew that I needed to somehow have the crime generation. I wanted it to be believable. I didn’t want it to be like, “oh look at that he’s suddenly evil”. I needed a reason, a believable, plausible method. So, I knew that I needed to look at his mother, and then her mother. So, I knew that Scarlett’s life would have to have a dramatic end. I knew that I wanted her story to be dynamic and really strong. She would have to struggle, and struggle she did. I think though, that in the end she was redeemed. Her story, despite its abrupt and fiery ending, was ultimately a happy one I think. She had come full circle and was on her way back. The Mikey thing was interesting. He was originally going to be a band member of Scarlett’s but I saw an opportunity to inject some more of myself into her character. So, I added the Mikey subplot, which also led to the kidnapping, which I thought worked very well for Charlie.
Scarlett received seven votes in the heir poll, tied with Nines Mason.
Name: Scarlett Melanie Mason. Though I was once known as Lisa Scarlett.
Spouse: pfft. None, thank god.
Favorite Memory: My daughter’s smile.
Hardest Moment: Losing my identity.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I would never have gone out on that stage.
Generation 6 – Family – Charlie Mason
- Family Oriented
Lifetime Wish: Surrounded by Family – Achieved
Charlie is another one of my favorites. Mostly because I LOVE insane characters. She’s I think, one of the most memorable characters in the history of the blog. Haha. I knew that I needed her to completely and totally traumatize her child who would be heir, and I like to think I succeeded, haha. She started out rather normally, I mean, as normally as she could ever get and I still love the slow decline into madness. It actually wasn’t really planned that way. Her story was organic, it flowed by itself. Dante had an affair in the game, through his own traits and I saw on opportunity. I pollinated the woman he had cheated on his wife with and maybe it was that method that made the baby so perfect.
Charlie received 3 votes in my favorite heir poll. No doubt because of her mistreatment of her son. I think the readers have had a harder time forgiving Charlie and not holding her actions against her.
Name: Charlie Mason
Spouse: Due to emotional strain, I will answer this. Charlie’s marriage to Dante Carter ended in divorce.
Favorite Memory: When Vincent’s eyes first opened and looked up at me, so full of trust. So full of love. His beautiful purity echoed within me.
Hardest Moment: When I realized that Vincent’s purity had been corrupted by evil.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I would have been more protective of my Vincent. I would have kept him chained inside if needed.
Generation 7 – Crime – Vincent Mason
Lifetime Wish: Leader of Evil Organization – Achieved
Ahh, Vincent. He is another favorite of mine. His generation had a LOT of planning involved, and he was of course, the generation where I was given the opportunity to collaborate with Styxlady. I wanted Vince to be like Ted Bundy. When you first meet someone like him, he seems charming and confident…but he’s really a cold-blooded murderer. He was the sort of man who needed to own things and people and have everything for himself.
Surprisingly, Vince came in second place for favorite heir.
Name: Vincent Valentine Mason
Occupation: They call me a criminal.
Spouse: Angela Moss
Favorite Memory: The thrill of victory over my enemies.
Hardest Moment: The, er, unfortunate rush of cognitive recollection unleashed by the shocks I received.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I wouldn’t have let my emotions get away with me.
Generation 8 – Politics – Nines Mason
Lifetime Wish: Leader of the Free World – Achieved
Nines’ Generation is my least favorite. I loved the Lily part, but I feel like this story was not as good as it could be. I was going through some hard times with my job during the generation, and I felt like I had lost my way. If I had the opportunity, I’d rewind and redo that generation. His generation followed the story of the American President.
Nines and Lily came in third for the favorite couple poll. Nines himself came tied for 5th place with Scarlett.
Name: Nines Patrick Mason
Spouse: None. I have had two marriages previously. My first marriage to Lily Chin ended in her death, and my second marriage ended in divorce.
Favorite Memory: Lily and my children.
Hardest Moment: Without a doubt, Lily’s death.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: If there was a way I could still have Lincoln and Madison, I wouldn’t have let Lily leave that night.
Generation 9 – Firefighter/?? – Kennedy and Madison Mason
- Hopeless Romantic
Kennedy’s story is just beginning. I’m afraid I really don’t have a lot to write on her at the moment. She received one vote in the poll.
Name: Kennedy Alicia Mason
Favorite Memory: Standing on the stage for the first time and singing my heart out.
Hardest Moment: My sister running away and leaving our Daddy alone.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: My life is only just beginning. Not a lot to change yet.
Madison has the makings for a great character. She’s troubled, tormented and walks a fine line in her life. She’s torn between herself, her past and her future. She’s haunted by the death of Kaia and now with the abandonment of her daughter. Her story is just beginning as well, she’s still a teenager. Her future is both bright and bleak, all depending on which path she chooses to take.
Madison has received 11 votes in the poll and is ranked fourth.
Name: Madison Marie Mason
Spouse: I was illegally married to Micah Miller
Favorite Memory: When Kaia told me she loved me.
Hardest Moment: Abandoning my daughter Elizabeth.
If you could do one thing from your life differently, what would it be?: I wouldn’t have gotten involved with Micah.
