Let it Be – Behind the Name

I struggled for a while to come up with a name for the blog. I didn’t want it to be ‘Mason Family’ blah blah. I wanted that to be in the subtext. While I was first making the blog I was listening to music. I was listening to my classic rock play list and the first song that I heard when I needed a title was Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times are a changin”. That is one of my favorite songs, and I was tempted to make that the title of the blog. However…it was too long.

So I experimented around. I thought ‘Changin’ Times’ or ‘The Times are Changin’. None of them worked for me. I was so bummed because I thought, what a perfect song for differences in the family tree. After all, isn’t that the point of each generation?

So I sat there, thinking when suddenly I heard Paul McCartney’s voice.

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the brokenhearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be

For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be

I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Yeah, let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Where Bob Dylan’s would have been too obvious a thing to represent the change that each generation would pass though, I thought that Let it Be represented more of a subtle variation on the idea. It was advice that a parent would give to a child or a spouse to another.

Many people think the song is religious in nature, when in actuality it is written by Paul McCartney about advice his mother, Mary, used to give him. Which to me, makes the song even more of a valid inspiration.

Let it Be is short and easy to remember. Its a phrase that can have multiple meanings for any person who reads it.
